Board Game Session Report for December 12, 2002: Carcassonne Hunters and Gatherers, Shogun, (The New) Entdecker

Home

Danger Planet session. 5-player Carcassonne Hunters and Gatherers, 5-player Shogun, 3-player (The New) Entdecker.

Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers

Players were Karl, Chris, Ralph, Cindy and myself. We all played before.

This game went by in a blur. I was interested in trying out Shogun with the group. All I know is I kept drawing exactly the tiles that weren't useful to growing any of my meeple's territory. A blocked in river, a hemmed in meadow, and the middles of forests when I didn't even have confidence in finishing one.

Game lasted 37 minutes.

Shogun

Players were Tom, Chris, Ralph, Cindy and myself. Tom and I played before.

Spent a bit of time setting up and going over the rules. This was the first time I played my game since my college days and I was disappointed to see I'm missing a green samurai bowman, and a province card for Omi. How could they get lost at all unless it happened at the college session.

We called an end early after one and a half rounds because we didn't have time to play through. People decided to focus attacks on me because I played before, and I ended up losing two daimyo armies before we quit. Nasty turn because my die rolls were mostly high. Did anyone else do as badly? Nope. Didn't help that I went last each round.

Starting off the game of Shogun; I feel insecure as the red player.

(The New) Entdecker

Players were Ralph, Chris and myself. Ralph and Chris were new players.

Ralph and Chris were doing well towards the beginning. Chris focused on one big high scoring island, though, and neglected exploring more islands, which kept him out of the running for island bonuses -- he just didn't have many scouts out. Ralph consistently ran out of money and kept rolling for income which kept Chris and me rolling in cash.

Game lasted an hour and fifteen minutes. A surprisingly quick game, even with Ralph pondering his moves so much -- even considering I scammed Chris and Ralph into thinking it would last 45 minutes. :-) I could kick myself, though, because this game has a beautiful layout at the end-game, and I forgot to take a picture of it.

By the way, I found out that I played the game incorrectly the previous times. Correct: tolls are paid when passing opponents' forts and settlements, but not scouts.
